Located within the World Heritage status area and close to the Cathedral, Acanthus WSM Architects worked closely with our associated Newcastle office on a variety of projects with St John’s College. This student residential scheme is situated behind the main college building that faces onto the Bailey. The site was severely constrained with all materials having to be taken through part of the existing building via two domestic scale doors!

38 ensuite bedrooms over three floors have been produced in a simple yet elegant style, well detailed with the highest quality of workmanship.

We are currently working on two new proposed projects for St John's College in Durham each dependent on the other.  A proposed reference library containing thirty thousand books will replace the existing library housed in a disused chapel.  Once the new library is complete the existing chapel will be demolished to make way for a second residential block that will ‘mime’ the original.
