Alric Drive, Cundy Cross

This small scheme on the eastern edge of Barnsley comprises 28 no. 2, 3- and 4-bedroom houses offered for social/intermediate rent and shared ownership. A fabric first approach was adopted to give exceptional levels of thermal insulation and air tightness whilst a flu gas heat recovery system further reduces energy requirements.

The pallet of materials respect the local vernacular whilst introducing feature areas of cladding panels to create rhythm and interest along the street scene. Gabled ‘book end’, bay windows and glass entrance canopies add detail and focal points to key vistas. Enhancements to the internal décor and finishes specification have raised the standard from the stereotypical view of social housing to one matching a private development giving a truly tenure blind scheme.
