We are pleased to report that the major expansion works at Totley Primary School, Sheffield were completed on programme and ready for the beginning of the autumn term and new school year. The extension of this popular Primary School involved creating two physically separate build elements providing an additional 810 sqm of space. The works included six new classrooms, staffroom, library and media / science rooms, along with associated WC’s and cloakrooms. The main building frame was constructed using a Structural Insulated Panel system manufactured offsite to reduce construction time and the project has achieved a BREEAM “Very Good” rating.

Congratulations to Darren Parr and Joe Keighley who successfully completed the STG ‘Office 2 Office’ cycle ride in aid of Reubans Retreat & Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice. Organised by Strategic Team Group the ride consisted of an 85 mile route (Castleford-Dukinfield-Castleford) and took in some gruelling hill climbs, including a very wet return ride over Saddleworth Moor in torrential rain.

Our latest residential development for Habinteg has recently been completed at Raynville Crescent, Leeds. These 14 new high specification units have been designed to offer lifetime accommodation for local disabled and non-disabled residents. The former brownfield site has been transformed with the help of grant funding from Leeds City Council through their Right to Buy receipts. With 11 houses built to the Lifetime Homes Standard and three Wheelchair bungalows the scheme provides exceptional levels of access. Extensive work was undertaken by Acanthus, Habinteg and the Centre for Accessible Environments (Habinteg’s inhouse technical consultancy), to ensure the scheme provides fully accessible homes for all making a significant difference to residents who require increased space and functionality.

Matthew Kelly, Habinteg’s New Business Manager and manager for the project said, “Raynville Crescent represents a local solution to the broader issue of providing quality, accessible homes to people who need them. The development’s intelligent design and specification indicate the way forward for the whole property sector, not just social housing.”

Acanthus WSM have been commissioned on a further nine developments across Leeds, East Yorkshire and London with work starting on site later this year.

Moor Lane, Scarborough

We were delighted to be asked by Engie to prepare design proposals for a small apartment scheme in the Eastfield district of Scarborough. A detailed planning consent was obtained in March 2018 for 29 one and two bedroom apartments over 3 floors.

The site is heavily constrained with steep level changes and a number of mature trees. Although not subject to a preservation order we were keen to retain as many as possible for the benefit of future residents and those living nearby.

Engie are developing this site on behalf of Yorkshire Coast Homes who will retain ownership and manage the building. Construction is due to start this summer with completion anticipated in August 2019.
